Someone yells “MAHJONG!”
…and you think…
What the Mahjong!
All your Mahjong plans. Finally in one place.
Start your own group, find your next game and log your Mahjongs. Your time is better spent playing than scrolling through 47 Facebook posts just to find out the tournament you wanted to go to was last Friday.
Post your game in seconds. Open it to nearby players or keep it invite-only for your usual suspects. Pick the day, the place and the skill level. You’re hosting, you get to be picky.
Then call it, log it and take the bragging rights. Track your Mahjongs, because “I win all the time” could use some receipts.
New to the game? Classes show up on the map too, so players can find a teacher near them and get to the table faster.
Type in the zip code where you’re headed and the map fills up with games there. Visiting your sister in Boca, a girls’ trip to Destin, wintering in Naples. Sit down with the locals for a game.
Log your wins all season long. No more “I’m pretty sure I won twice last Tuesday.” The app remembers, and so will everyone else.
Keep games, event details and sign-ups in one place, so you know when to play, where to go and how to join without investigating half of Facebook.
my first Mahjong! What the MAHJONG! all started with a neighborhood Facebook post.
Patti, a neighbor I hadn’t met yet, was tired of the politics and drama in our neighborhood feed. So she posted something positive: three things she loved. Plants, sourdough and Mahjong.
Plants? Okay, I’m listening.Sourdough? Keep talking…Mahjong? I’d seen it online. It looked confusing and challenging. Naturally, I decided to go to a stranger’s house and give it a try.Patti offered to host and teach, and even though it was outside my comfort zone, I went. The picture you see is from that very first night, before I knew those beautiful little tiles were about to take over my calendar. And apparently, my shopping budget.
I was hooked. But finding the next game? That took some work.
I was digging through Facebook posts, joining every Mahjong group I could find and keeping up with scattered group chats just to find games, events and tournaments. Find a post, lose the post, forget which group it was in. Was registration open? Did I need to comment, send a message or click a link somewhere?
I wanted to play Mahjong. I had somehow become a part-time investigator.
Then there were the scheduling apps meant for things like kids’ baseball practice. Mahjong has its own skill levels, house rules and table preferences. We were making do with whatever was available.
Surely there was a better way.
That’s how What the MAHJONG! was born: a place to find a game, host an event, post a tournament, start your own table, find a teacher and meet people you might never have met otherwise. With the details and sign-ups in one place, where you can actually find them again.
I want more people to have what Patti’s post gave me: new friends, a reason to step outside their comfort zone and a ridiculous amount of fun.
Was there a selfish motive? Absolutely. I wanted to know where all the games were. Helping design an entire app may have been a slightly excessive solution, but here we are.
Am I slightly obsessed? Let’s just say most people get hooked and buy tiles. I helped design a Mahjong app.
Okay, who are we kidding? I bought a lot of tiles, too.
